Sushi Rolling Mat 김밥말이 롤툴

Sushi Rolling Bamboo Mat and Silicone Mat, and Rice Paddles~

Sushi Rolling Mat is a quintessential item for the sushi chef and home-based newbie alike, although, with some experience - you can do without it. The rolling mat is used to maintain even pressure from all sides of the sushi roll while rolling it.

These kitchen tools are pretty easy to find (any Asian market will carry them, or grocery stores with Asian or “ethnic” aisle.) You can also get them online if all else fails.^^
They are good and cheap, can be disposable; and it doesn’t hurt to have a few extra around.

I have both, the bamboo rolling mat and silicone rolling mat. (see above photo)
But the bamboo mat I have is the cheapest kind, and the most common type of sushi mat. It is made of thin, rounded sticks (much like bamboo skewers).

The little pricey bamboo mats however, are made of flatter, squared sticks-- one side is rounded and the other is flat. They are versatile, a lot easier to use, and bring much more impressive results.

As for me, silicone mats are better than the bamboo, because they are so easy to use and easier to clean. They don’t have spaces where food can accumulate, so they are much more hygienic, and won’t retain odors or flavors as easily as bamboo mats; and the nonstick surface can be used either with or without seaweed paper.

Tips:
When bamboo mats are used to make an inside out roll, it needs to be wrapped in saran tape or plastic wrap in order to keep the rice from sticking to the mat. This may also be applied while making a classic roll to make the mat easier to clean during the process.

You can also use sushi mats as hot pads or trivets, or even placemats.^^

Note:
Sushi Mats should be washed and properly cleaned after use; They should be thoroughly air dried to avoid the growth of bacteria and fungi.
